writing and stuff

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

i’ve been trying to come up with article ideas for associated content. i’m thinking about doing a number of non-paying submissions that are about various experiences… just for the practice and to have more content. if you’re interested in checking out what i’ve got submitted so far:

broke out the video camera yesterday… to get familiar with it again so i can get some video of gage this summer.

i think for gage’s birthday this year i wanna go to the zoo… just the three of us.

the bookbox i started on bookcrossing.com (favorite authors/favorite books) is almost home. there are 2 people who still need to receive it before it will be on its way to me. i sent it out in july with some of my favorite books and books by some of my favorite authors in it:

  • dragons of autumn twilight, by margaret weiss and tracy hickman
  • the fifth profession, by david morrell
  • into thin air, by david krakauer
  • hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy, by douglas adams
  • it, by stephen king
  • fried green tomatoes at the whistle stop cafe, by fannie flagg
  • from potters field, by patricia cornwell
  • fatal cure, by robin cook
  • all around the town, by mary higgins clark

i think there was one more but i can’t recall what it was… probably a james patterson… i look forward to seeing what my little box of books has in it when it comes home. the requirement for books being added to replace those taken out is that they be favorite books, or books by favorite authors.

i also sent out a bookbox in january that is all books that were made into movies. it’s on its 3rd recipient at the moment, i believe. it might take a little longer as it’s traveling to canada for a few stops. that one went out containing:

  • sleepers, by lorenzo carcaterra
  • dune, by frank herbert
  • the terminal man, by michael crichton
  • hunt for red october, by tom clancy
  • the runaway jury, by john grisham
  • primal fear, by william diehl
  • lord of the flies, by william golding
  • misery, by stephen king
  • dracula, by bram stoker

there might be more in that one, but i can’t remember. that one the requirement for the books added is that they be movies that were made into movies… even if they were just made for tv… just have to be made into movies.

i’m looking forward to seeing what these two bookboxes come home with.

i find it highly amusing…

that stephen king’s IT is on abc family at the moment.

why not… when i was a kid horror films were quality family entertainment. many a night did my family gather around the tv or at the drive in movies to have the crap scared out of us as a family. of course nowadawys people get so pissed off if you show a horror film to a child. ok, i admit that since gage has had night terrors after we watched a horror flick while he was awake, we wait till he’s asleep now… but if your kid can handle it, like my sisters and i could, by all means, take your kid to that horror triple feature at the drive in. scare the bejesus out of them! have a good time with your kids!

some of the best memories of my life are spending time at the drive in movies with my family watching horror flicks. my love of horror movies, and horror novels comes from my mom.

i had decided to blow out an egg to decorate for ostara/spring equinox.  i actually blew out 2, so i’d have a backup… i started decorating the first… and gage is playing with the second one.  so i guess it’s a good thing i did 2.  one to decorate and one for gage to play with, at least until it starts cracking.

last night, paul stastny scored 2 goals…  which extended his consecutive games with a point streak to 20 — the kids on fire and actually getting some calder trophy talk.  which is excellent.

or perhaps we’re not going grocery shopping today.

* le sigh*

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

gotta go grocery shopping today if at all possible.  down to virtually nothing for me to eat.  no, that’s not totally true… there’s some pasta, and i’ve got some spaghetti sauce thawing… there’s rice… some meats… no fresh vegetables left, really.  gage is down to spaghetti, pizza rolls and toaster scrambles/strudels.  that’s all i’ve got that he’ll eat.

fortunately there are a lot of good sales going on right now.  so i should be able to get more than enough for the next two weeks without breaking the bank.

candles candles candles!

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

so… i’ve been making scented candles the past few months, which i enjoy tremendously. especially contemplating different scent combinations and such… like vanilla rose and sandalwood rose… and vanilla coconut lime (which was absolutely loved by the people i gave one of those to).

since i enjoy it so much, i thought it would be cool to list some on ebay… not so much to make a profit, just to help finance the making of more candles. since i keep or give away about half of the candles i make.

so feel free to hop by my ebay page and give them a look. most of them are ending in a few minutes, but the ones that don’t sell will be relisted. the scents i have available at the moment are: vanilla rose, sandalwood rose, vanilla coconut lime, hawaiian cake, fresia, spring nights, lemongrass, citrus sensation and macintosh apple.  they’re all great scents.  as a matter of fact, i’m keeping one of each so you know i like em ;)  i’m also making tea lights with the leftover wax and including a tea light or two with each candle i sell.

good times

Friday, March 16th, 2007

spent some time outside with gage afterschool today.  it was fun.  tossed the ball for tiger he loved that.  now HE’s zonked out on the couch.  gage is watching ice age 2.  gage had a blast.  i had a blast.  the alphabet is written on the back porch, gage tried riding his bike and tricycle… we blew bubbles… even practiced a little sign language.

i grabbed one of gage’s little chairs and sat on the back porch to hang out with him… so he went inside and got the other one, put it down in front of me and sat down face to face with me and jsut started talking — not many discernable words, but he was trying to communicate, i think.  so we started going thru the signs that we’ve been working on.  i also threw in a few others, in addition to signing everything i was saying to him while he was sitting there paying total attention to me.

hmm… no clue what’s going on this evening… perhaps just some relaxed time with my little angel.

do you remember all those commercials for perdue chicken with frank perdue?

do you remember thinking that ross perot looked a hell of a lot like frank perdue?

someone on stump the schwab (reruns on ECL) just did a ross perot impression.

and all i could think of was a perdue commercial that showed people ripping the skin off their chicken… voice over (frank perdue) saying something like “lately i’ve noticed that people are stripping their chicken before they eat it…”

cut to a shot of frank perdue, head and shoulders w/ no manner of shirt on…
“so i took it off.  i took it all off”

it popped in my head because of the impression… i cracked up.  i thought perhaps some of you might also be amused.

that was a complete waste of time. seriously. anyone out there thinking about applying at the nearby 7-11 because you can conveniently walk to it… make sure that THAT specific store is hiring before you bother. apparently EVERY store has indications that they’re hiring. isn’t that nice? yeah. huge fucking waste of my time.

woody sent me this from blabbermouth.net

Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of AEROSMITH, Roger Daltrey of THE WHO, Robert Plant of LED ZEPPELIN, Tommy Lee and Vince Neil of MÖTLEY CRÜE, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons of KISS, Rob Halford of JUDAS PRIEST, Ronnie James Dio, and Dee Snider of TWISTED SISTER are among the classic rock legends featured in the first 30-second public service announcement that will be launched on April 1 by VH1 Classic as part of its first-ever pro-social initiative geared towards raising awareness about autism. The announcement of the campaign’s launch was made today (March 13) to cable programmers and affiliates at a luncheon during Forum 2007, the Cable Television Public Affairs Association’s annual conference.

Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder that is the fastest growing developmental disability in the United States, affecting one in every 150 children born today. The cause of autism is still unknown and a cure does not exist.

“Autism is such a devastating disorder for so many families, and its rate of prevalence is increasing at an alarming rate,” said Tom Calderone, Executive Vice President and General Manager, VH1. “VH1 Classic has dedicated itself to making an impact on autism because many of our viewers are parents who are now dealing with this issue. We’ve also found over the years that this disorder has touched the lives of many of the artists and musicians that we work with at VH1 Classic.”

“Rock Autism” will use the influence of VH1 Classic and its connections with classic rock artists to make a measurable impact in this field by bringing awareness to the facts about autism, and by raising funds for autism organizations.

The campaign will feature both on and off-air components, including public service announcements, VH1 Classic news breaks, and on-air fundraising stunts. The April launch will also include “Pay to Play,” a fundraiser where viewers can go online and make a donation in exchange for VH1 Classic playing their favorite classic video. Proceeds from this element will go to The Cure Autism Now Foundation. VH1 Classic previously used “Pay to Play” as a fundraiser after Hurricane Katrina to raise funds for Mercy Corps, an international humanitarian relief organization. This partnership with Mercy Corps was VH1 Classic’s first public affairs effort and successfully raised over $150,000 for hurricane relief.

In addition, a website will be created at www.rockautism.vh1classic.com where viewers can access information on autism, link to autism organizations, and learn about upcoming fundraising events and auctions in conjunction with the initiative.

very nice :)
