On the subject of cholesterol…

A couple of years ago, my mom was informed by her doctor that she had high cholesterol and told her that she had a certain amount of time to lower it and then they’d look into pharmaceutical options. While I agree with the idea that unless it’s an extreme case you should work on dietary and lifestyle changes to lower cholesterol before hitting up the pharmacy for the best drugs money can buy, it would have been very nice if the doctor had told my mother How To Lower Cholesterol. He gave her no information, not so much as an information sheet with a list of foods that lower bad cholesterol or foods that are low in cholesterol in the first place. Mom bought about 15 different books on the subject, wasted a couple hundred dollars trying to find information that the doctor should have given her in the first place. Needless to say, when my mom told me about that I was livid. Half of the books she bought were several years old and contained outdated information, a bunch of others were full of medical jargon that she didn’t understand. There were even a couple of cookbooks. Cookbooks! While I’m sure they were loaded with recipes for low cholesterol meals/dishes, they didn’t help. There was no information on what made them low in cholesterol or what made the dishes help to lower cholesterol, and there was certainly no mention of lifestyle changes she should endeavor to make. All she wanted was to know how she could lower her cholesterol without drugs. That’s all. Instead she got a stack of books that are useless except as a booster seat for one of her grandchildren. What she needed was up to date information that she could understand on How To Lower Cholesterol and improve her health. It’s really not too much to ask.
