several years ago, during the 2002-03 hockey season, I was watching my beloved Colorado Avalanche play against the Nashville Predators. I was extremely pissed off at one player(one of the Predators), who kept blocking the puck and keeping my boys from scoring. Frustrated, I went online and looked him up so I would know who to yell at. That was when I discovered Karlis Skrastins. Frustrating as it was that he kept preventing my team from scoring, I also found him fascinating. I found myself watching Predators games as well as Avalanche games, just to watch him play. Imagine my excitement when the Avs acquired him! Since that day, he has been my favorite player in the league. Even when he was traded, I continued to follow his career. I would tell people that my 3 favorite teams are: the Colorado Avalanche, the San Jose Sharks, and whatever team Skrastins plays for.
He may not have been a marquee player, but he had an impact. A tremendous one, in my opinion. He was a shot blocker, a defensive defenseman my favorite type of player. Watching him jump in when the goal tender found himself out of position was fantastic. My ex and I used to joke that he could be in the locker room, having his broken leg taped to a splint so he could get back in the game, and if the goaltender slipped out of position, he would be there to block the shot. Special K. That was our personal nickname for him. I wish I had had the opportunity to meet him.
I watched as he captained his national team in the last two winter Olympics, hoping they would win a medal and tried like hell to get a Team Latvia jersey with his name and number on it. I have been a proud Skrastins fan since that Avs/Preds games.
Tragically, the plane carrying him and his KHL team to Minsk for a game crashed. Karlis, and many other outstanding hockey players were lost. It is truly a sad day for this hockey fan. My heart goes out to the family and friends of all the people lost in the crash.
You will be sorely missed, Special K.
